Website analysis – People
magazine
- The main heading ‘people’ uses the same font as what is used on the covers of these magazines. This helps to make the brand easy to recognise and makes their products consistent.
- Across the top there is categories, clicking on these takes you to another page that lists stories within this specific category, organising the website like this helps the audience easily find what they’re looking for.
- The website uses multiple different fonts, this helps o break up the different types of text, so it doesn’t all look the same. They use different texts for headings, stories and titles of stories. All the text is black however, some of it is bold which makes it stand out.
- The website uses purple for boxes that say things like ‘exclusive’ this draws attention to these stories. The blue used for the main title is also used throughout the website separating different areas of the home page. On the explore menu there is also yellow which helps to add colour to the website, this helps it to be more interesting.
- The homepage shows a selection of recent, featured stories which are likely going to interest the largest amounts of people, the often feature bigger celebrities as more people will know them and therefor read this story. Down the left side there is some smaller, less important stories. These are still likely to interest a lot of people but likely not as many.
- The images used relate to the story they’re placed with, this helps the audience to see who/what the story is about before they read the title. This can also make it easy for someone to find what they’re looking for as they may see celebrities they’re looking for stories about, for example.
- Having a website allows magazine companies such as People keep up with technology, people don’t need magazines about celebrity gossip as they can access it through social media and the internet. Using a website allows People to create and publish stories as soon as something happens rather than waiting until the next episode of the magazine.
- The bottom of the homepage has links to their social media pages, their twitter has 7.5 Million followers, their Instagram has 6.4 Million and their facebook has 7.6 million. These pages help to gain followers as people share and interact with posts, a lot of the stories they post are links that take you to their website.

analysis - The Hollywood Reporter
- In the top left corner, the website title ‘the Hollywood reporter’ uses the same font as what is used on the covers for their print products. The title is white and in a red box, this colour scheme is commonly used across the covers for the masthead however it is not always used, this helps the website and print products look similar and the brand to be recognisable.
- On the home page there is a selection of different stories, some of these have accompanying images which makes them stand out from the rest. Images also help to help the audience find what they are looking for as they could recognise certain characters from a film, for example.
- The website doesn’t use a lot of colour, the background is white, and the text is black. However, there is some text in blue, these show what category a story belongs to such as politics, movies, tv, etc. this makes it easier for the audience to distinguish what they are/are not interested in.
- After the selection of featured stories there is a link to the most recent episode of the magazine, accompanied by a picture of the cover. There is also a link to subscribe to the magazine making it easy to access for the audience.
- There are then multiple sections on different topics, for example; movies, movie reviews, tv, tv reviews, tech, awards and business. Separating stories into different areas like this makes it easier to find what you’re looking for which would make the audience more likely to visit the website as it is easy to navigate. These categories are also used across the bar at the top, clicking them takes you to a page where all the stories from those categories are listed.
- Right at the bottom there is links to the social media pages and contact details making it easy to contact the company. Their twitter page has 3 Million followers, their facebook has 2.4 Million likes and their Instagram has 1.6 Million followers.

analysis - Entertainment weekly
- the website for Entertainment Weekly has links to different pages that are focused on different areas such as; TV, movies, music, books, theatre, podcasts and gaming. This helps the audience to easily find what they’re looking for and keeps the website organised and easy to navigate. Also, this means that people who are only interested in certain topics don’t have to scroll past content that they’re not interested in.
- the website uses different fonts, this means that it is not repetitive as everything doesn’t look the same, they use different fonts for headings and titles of articles so that they stand out, this is what grabs the attention of the audience and makes them want to read an article therefore the titles need to stand out against the rest of the page.
- On the homepage there are a variety of popular stories, these focus on things that are popular and well known, this is so it appeals to the biggest possible audience as more people will be familiar with what it is about.
- The headings on the home page are different, there are articles that focus on reviews, recent events (such as award shows) and the featured stories.
- The main heading ‘Entertainment weekly’ is in the same colour that is commonly used for the masthead on the magazines. This makes the website and magazines consistent and makes the brand recognisable. The website also uses a green colour to make headings such as ‘what to watch’ and ‘latest news’ stand out, this also gives the overall website more colour which stops it from being boring. The use of these bright colours may help the website appeal more to younger people.
- On the home page the more important/popular stories are bigger and down the left side there are a selection of stories that are much smaller, these are likely to appeal to as many people as the ones that are bigger however they still focus on fairly well known topics.
- All the images used on the website link to the stories, they likely make it easier for6 the audience to see what they’re looking for as they may see actors or characters from a tv show they like, for example.
- Companies like this have websites so they can keep up with technological changes, less people buy magazines now due to the internet and social media, so these websites help to keep the audience engaged, the website gives you the option to subscribe this allows the website to still make a profit. Subscribing allows you to access more content and articles than before.

Entertainment Weekly’s Instagram has 1.6 Million followers, the facebook page has 4.5 Million likes and their twitter has 6.6 Million followers. Having social media pages help to gain the attention of a younger audience.
- The covers of ‘the Hollywood Reporter’ usually show 3-5 different actors/actresses, the often show different ages and nationalities within the selection of people on the cover.
- The covers often have a neutral colour scheme, they don’t use bright colours as the covers are made to feel very sophisticated. Which suggests that it is aimed at a middle-class audience.
- The cover doesn’t have much text on it, this means that the audience can’t get an idea of what will be in it.
- Using famous and well-known people of the cover of their magazines allows the target audience to grow. All the people on the cover are going to have a fan base or people who like them, these people are likely to want to buy the episode of this magazine as they like the people featured on the cover.
- The main heading on the cover says, ‘Go ahead, call us ‘difficult’’, this would likely grab the audience’s attention and gain their interest as they are likely going to be intrigued to what this could be about.
- This cover is likely going to attract a female audience as people on the cover are all women which the primary audience is, however, there will be some men who will also be interested in the cover, this is the secondary audience.
- This magazine is aimed at a more sophisticated audience, this is shown throughout the colours, fonts and clothing worn by the people in the photo.
